For generations the Mallia family that hails from Kalkara has been involved in the building, restoration and repair of small sea craft.

These included sailing coasters (xprunara), two bow boats (luzzijiet), bumboats (luzzijiet tas-Sajd), vendors’ boats (luzzijiet tal-gadrajja), caiques (kajjiki), small fast boats (firilli), passenger boats (dghajjes tas-sajd), sailing boats (dghajjes tal-qlugh), gigs (giggijiet), whalers (wejli), skiffs (fregatini) and probably small rafts (imrejkba).

Patrick Mallia is still actively dedicated to this craft which he has inherited from his forefathers but which is gradually heading towards its extinction.
