It was from this spot facing Kalkara’s Xewkija Bay that the Turkish Army succeeded in breaching the bastion and penetrating the walls of the city during the Great Siege of 1565. In the skirmish that ensued, Grandmaster La Valette was wounded as he led the defenders to expel the invading marauders.
