Lombard Bank was registered in Malta in May 1969 to operate as a fully licensed commercial bank. Its origins however date to 1955 when Lombard Banking Limited of London was already taking deposits in Malta through a number of agents. This agency business was formalised in 1969 as Lombard Bank (Malta) Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Lombard North Central plc, UK.
In 1975, the Malta Government purchased 25% of the Bank’s ordinary shares. An option to acquire a further 35% was exercised by Government in 1981. The remaining 40% were retained by Lombard North Central. In April 1990 the Bank became a Public Limited Company and in May 1990 offered equity to the public. The issue was five times oversubscribed. Government shareholding was subsequently totally divested.
In 1994 the Bank listed its shares on the Malta Stock Exchange. Today the largest shareholding is held by Banca Unione Di Credito Lugano. Approximately 1,300 shareholders, including corporates and local investment funds hold the balance.
As a fully licensed credit institution Lombard Bank undertakes a diverse range of business activities including investment business and currency dealing. Lombard Bank operates a branch network in Malta and Gozo with its Head Office situated in Palazzo Spinola - Valletta.
