A 1274 document mentioning the oldest churches in Birgu includes one dedicated to Santa Maria in the Castrum Maris Interiore. This probably refers to the rock-cut church which was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin which later enjoyed parish status encompassing the suburb of Birgu.
