Malta has provided shipyard services in the commercial sector since the mid 1960s.
Malta Shipyards Ltd. is made up of the Cospicua Site (formerly Malta Drydocks), the Marsa Site (formerly Malta Shipbuilding Company Limited), Manoel Island Yacht Yard Limited, and the Malta Shipyards Tank Cleaning Station. The Shipyards remain one of the largest employers in Malta.
Malta Shipyards offer a substantial range of products to the general maritime ship repair, offshore / energy, liner, yachting and conversion sectors from one of the largest facilities in the Mediterranean.
Safety within the Shipyards has been significantly improved; we remain committed to further developments in this area, recognising also the support given by our customers.
Security procedures have also been upgraded the Shipyard having been certified as complying with the relevant provisions of the ISPS Code.
General ship repair continues as a core activity, however the diversification into other sectors has created a stronger more focused company, more able to react to market trends, technically or commercially. Modern steel replacement technology has recently been introduced with applications of SPS (Sandwich Plate System) being carried out. The Shipyards location in the Grand Harbour, an environmentally sensitive area, has seen the introduction of modern surface preparation methods to replace, in the medium term, dry grit blasting.
In the offshore sector since the successful completion of the FPSO “Ikdam” in 2001, the Shipyards have continued to complete major projects, including refits to semi - submersible oilrigs, crane barges, drill ships and have been contracted for the construction of an offshore power generation barge.
Malta Shipyards has also formed a number of strategic partnerships to add and broaden expertise where required in order to offer a top quality range of specialised services to meet the needs of clients. These partnerships include surface preparation, advanced coatings application, access provision and other areas of specialised engineering.
