Church of St Philip Neri
(formerly of the Virgin of the Guardian Angel)

This Church, first built in the 1400s, was dedicated to the Virgin of the Guardian Angel. It was rebuilt in 1561 and then again in 1624. Bishop Balaguer passed the Church to the Oratorians of St Philip Neri in 1652, and also entrusted them with the care of the Church of Mount Carmel on the Marina Grande in 1653.

The Oratory of St Philip Neri is a congregation of secular priests established in Rome in 1612 and formed in Birgu in 1650. After being entrusted with the Church of the Virgin of the Guardian Angel, the Oratarians changed its name to that of St Philip Neri. The Church was enlarged and embellished with various works of art, enlarged again in 1770, and eventually consecrated in 1788.

Hit during the Second World War, the Church of St Philip Neri was closed and repaired but is still not in use.
