The Maltese in general are rambunctious, gregarious, and typically love a good party. Their carnivals and religious feasts – which they call festas – are always highly organised, colourful, noisy, and greatly enjoyable. The festa is also an outlet for the equally compelling passion that the Maltese have for the ceremonial.
Every year, each locality in Malta would celebrate the feast of its local Patron Saint with great pomp and ceremonial splendour. These feasts are a combination of dignity and reverence of the liturgical celebrations, which are highlighted by Feast Day procession with the statute of the Patron Saint. Such solemnities would be further combined with the more earthly exultations of the external festivities. These follow an elaborate pattern of church-bell ringing, street decorations, lights and fireworks. The people of Cottonera are no exception and their local feasts rank amongst the most jubilant on the Islands. |
