Easter customs and traditions seem to have their origin in the influx of Greek Rhodians who followed the Order to Malta in 1530. In 1575 the Rhodian brothers Gerolomo and Antonio Caccialepre erected the Chapel in the Church of the Annunciation, including the effigy in wood of the Risen Christ. A Confraternity of the Risen Christ was later set up in Vittoriosa in 1659 in the Church known as Ta’ l-Erwieħ, or All Souls.
Up until 1962 it was customary that at Easter dawn, noon, and evening, a drummer would pass through the streets beating a drum. However the Easter Sunday procession with the traditional run of the Statue of the Risen Lord is still practiced in Cottonera. |
