Right at the end of the peninsula and jutting out into the Grand Harbour, the Gardjola Garden offers a wonderful and panoramic view of the surrounding area. At the extreme end of this garden, which is also referred to as Safe Haven Garden, Grandmaster La Sengle built the Vedette with its famous eye and ear bearing the inscription “As long as I stand here, you may rest.” This post was manned all day by Knights and Maltese sentries who kept a constant watch against any incursion from the sea. At the time of the Order, the garden was equipped with cannon posts and ammunition to strengthen the defence of the city. During the British era, these cannons were replaced by modern ones so as to defend the Naval Dockyard. Today the Garden is purely a place for relaxation.
