In 1794 Nicola and Madalena Dingli bequeathed their property to the Confraternity of the Holy Crucifix so as to set up a Hospice for the needy, especially elderly women on the condition that preference is given to the founders’ relatives and inhabitants of Siġġiewi and Senglea. During the French occupation this place was run by the Franciscan Sisters who also ran a kindergarten in order to be able to finance its running costs. In 1816 the premises were enlarged and a chapel was added. The hospice was demolished and modernised in 1980. Today it is essentially used as a residential home for senior citizens. |
