Fort of Our Saviour |
|
The Fort of Our Saviour was built on the site where a small church dedicated to Our Saviour – the first known building in the area – once stood. The site was also strategically used by General Mustafa in 1565 where he mounted 18 guns pointing against St Elmo and St. Angelo.
The fort was built by Grand Master D. Antonio Manuel de Vilhena in 1724 equipped with 22guns and two gun powder stores able to take 250 barrels. The fort was eventually equipped with workshops, stores and infirmary to be turned into a reformatory for the detention of juveniles who were serving prison sentences in Corradino prisons. The first nine detainees were moved in on 11th July 1921, when a chapel was also set up. In 1927 legislation extended the functions of the reformatory from corrective to preventive cases thus admitting cases of juveniles who were also living a delinquent way of life.
