Situated in St Therese Street near the church and convent of the Carmelitan Friars, this statue was sculpted in rock in 1818 by Vincenzo Dimech (1768-1831). Carved in a baroque style, the statue of St Elia is considered to be one of the most realistic statues on the Maltese Islands. St Elia is holding a sword of fire in his left hand – which is also resting on the wheel of a burning chariot. The tall beard and long hair seem as if they are being blown by the wind, exuding an aura of splendour and dignity.
Described in the scriptures as a defender of God’s laws on Mount Carmel, St Elia is considered as the Patron Saint of the Carmelitan Friars. He is also the Patron Saint of sailors. This statue was revered by many local seamen who found shelter in Bormla and who regularly sought St Elia to protect them in their voyages. Bishop Fernando Mattei granted an indulgence to those who recited a prayer in front of this statue.
